If you’ve been looking mattress toppers, you’ve most definitely heard about latex mattress toppers. It’s one of the most popular materials for mattress toppers, and for good reason. Latex mattress toppers are very affordable compared to other materials.
In this article, I’ll be explaining what latex mattress toppers are, going over the pros and cons of latex mattress toppers and providing some recommendations for different types of sleepers.
Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Pros and Cons of Latex Mattress Toppers
Why is latex a good choice?
Latex mattress toppers are a great choice if you’re going for something that will be durable and long-lasting. Latex is one of the most durable mattress topper materials. These factors are the main reasons for why latex toppers are so in demand. When you buy a mattress topper, you’re looking for something that will last, not something that will begin to show its age after a year.
Comfort is also a factor which plays a major part. As there are a large variety of latex toppers, there’s also a wide variety of comfort levels. If you’re going for the luxury plush feel, there are more than enough latex toppers which can work well for you. If you’re more into firm toppers, there are also options for you!
Latex toppers are also quite similar to memory foam, it can absorb your movements in bed and provide relief to your joints and muscles.
Another positive is that the majority of latex toppers are hypoallergenic, meaning they are very unlikely to cause allergic reactions. They also have some antimicrobial properties, and the likelihood of bedbugs is very low.
What about the cons?
Some people who own latex mattress toppers complain about it having a distinctive odour, something akin to vanilla. This smell is not unpleasant and isn’t due to any chemicals, it’s just the natural smell of the material.
Firmness is also something that people have complained about. Some people find that it is too firm for their liking. Fortunately there are now many options for latex mattress toppers and on some retailers you can choose the thickness of the topper.
Depending on the type of latex topper you can buy, it can sometimes feel like a ‘cheap, fake’ material. This is more commonly seen in budget latex toppers, as they have to sacrifice quality for price, but fear not, there are many great budget options who don’t sacrifice quality! You’ll be able to find these in the topic below 🙂

Choosing the right latex mattress topper
There are a lot of factors that go into choosing mattress toppers. Seeing as toppers are quite a costly investment, it would be wise to do your research before plunging in.
For stomach sleepers, there are a lot of variables that go into choosing a mattress topper. First, you should ask yourself, “is my current mattress too soft?”. If you find yourself saying yes, then you should really go for a firm topper. When choosing the thickness, you should generally avoid 3-inch toppers as these can feel a bit too firm and can lead to an uncomfortable sleeping experience.
1-2 Inch mattress toppers work perfectly for stomach sleepers, as it’s not too firm but at the same time is firm enough to support your sleeping style.
This rule generally applies to back sleepers too, but some back sleepers enjoy 3 inch thick toppers as they provide more support to the back.
For all the side sleepers out there, you have more specific needs to be taken care of than people sleeping on their bottoms. There is less area to which pressure is felt and most is forced upon your shoulders and joints, which over time could lead to diseases such as arthritis if the sleeper does not have a good sleeping experience.
For thickness, you should be looking at the higher side, 2-3 inches. This is because you need more support, and it leads to more comfy sleep.
When it comes to firmness, you should have a more softer topper to ensure correct pressure relief. To calculate firmness, check if you are sinking into your mattress, if you are, then you will need a firm topper.
Medium firmness is what you should be going for with these toppers.
Pairing with mattress protectors
Pairing a mattress topper with a mattress protector is a very good idea. You should make sure you are not getting a mattress protector which comes with padding or anything of the sort, as that can end up dampening the effect of the mattress topper.
If you’re looking for some mattress protector recommendations, check out: 5 mattress protectors I recommend. Whilst I wrote that article for memory foam, it still holds true to latex toppers.
Latex toppers are one of the best choices you could go for when it comes to mattress toppers. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. Make sure before you buy any product you do a lot of research, reading through reviews and articles like this 🙂
I’ll be posting another article very soon on the best memory foam mattress protectors, which are another type of mattress protector that a lot of people enjoy.
